Cleveland Municipal Stadium 1931-1993
Cleveland Municipal Stadium, originally called Lakefront Stadium, was the first stadium built using public funds at a cost of $2.5million dollars. Designed by the Osborn Engineering Company, the 78,000 seat, triple-deck, steel and concrete stadium construction began June 24, 1930 and was completed on July 1, 1931. In the early years of the stadium the Cleveland Indians continued to play weekday games at League Park and weekend, holiday, and selected important games at Lakefront Stadium. Starting with the 1947 season the Cleveland Indians began playing all their home games at Lakefront Stadium and it became known as Cleveland Municipal Stadium. On October 3, 1993 the Cleveland Indians played their last home game at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The stadium officially closed on December 17, 1995 and was demolished November 4, 1996.
